What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a complete system of medicine based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles and modern scientific and physiologic systems. It is used to assess, diagnose and treat.
It refers to the stimulation of specific points, identified by anatomical and physiological standards, as well as by manual inspection & palpation. Stimulation of points elicits a predictable physiological response including neurophysiological responses in the muscles, spinal cord and brain, as well as biochemical and hormonal responses in the body.
These responses either change the body’s experience of symptoms, especially pain, or trigger the release of substances which influence the body’s internal regulation. This includes the administration of manual, mechanical, thermal and electro-therapeutic stimulation.

Dr. Arden McMahon completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. She continued her education, attending chiropractic school in Toronto at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. While in Toronto, she discovered a passion for treating all types of patients; from athletes to office workers, children to seniors, and everyone in between. Arden finds most satisfaction from working hands on with people and helping them get back to doing what they love.

Arden has seen a chiropractor since the age of 2 years old, but became interested in the career as a teenager dealing with a shoulder injury. Arden was a synchronized swimmer competing at both national and international levels. She attributes her ability to stay in the sport as long as she did to the treatment and support of her chiropractors.

Arden is excited to start her career and continue her learning at breathe health and performance. She was able to complete her preceptorship under the supervision of Dr. Pickering, where she found a like minded group of people, who equally love snacks and furthering their knowledge. She describes herself as a “permanent student” with an ever-growing list of courses she wants to take and a desire to learn from each patient she works with. Arden is currently trained in chiropractic manipulation and mobilization techniques, soft tissue therapy, and acupuncture.

Dr Danielle Pickering is a chiropractor that employs chiropractic manipulation, soft tissue treatments and exercise rehabilitation to help her patients achieve their goal. She enjoys running, spin, yoga and anything outside.

Danielle Pickering attended chiropractic school at University of Western States in Portland, Oregon and graduated in 2012. She concurrently completed her Master of Science in Exercise and Sport Science which enabled her to become a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner (CCSP) through the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. She has since been trained in Active Release Technique (ART) and Graston Technique. Dr. Pickering has also completed the Complete Concussion Management Course to further her knowledge on how to treat concussions. Focus on her own development as a practitioner is important to Danielle and she continues to actively attend seminars and courses to improve her skills and knowledge to better serve her patients.

Danielle’s interest in chiropractic and sport medicine began when she was dealing with her own injuries growing up as a competitive figure skater where she experienced lower back and sacroiliac pain. Because of her experience with her own chiropractor, Dr. Campbell, she decided to pursue a Bachelor of Physical Education at the University of Alberta. During her time at the U of A, she had the opportunity to work as a receptionist at a local chiropractic and sports injury clinic which cemented her plan to continue her education at chiropractic school.

Once she completed chiropractic school she had the amazing opportunity to work with and learn from an accomplished group of chiropractors and therapists at one of the most established and revered clinics in the city. She continued to practice there for 7 years until 2020 when she opened breathe health and performance to continue assisting people in achieving their goals.

Marian Eddy went to chiropractic school at the University of Western States in Portland Oregon, where she also completed a Masters of Science in Sports Medicine. She has since been trained in Active Release Technique (ART), and Graston, and has also taken further courses including Rocktape, and Complete Concussion Management.

Marian grew up playing soccer, which brought her to the University of Alberta for a BSc Kinesiology. An injury in her first year ended her time with the Pandas, which she’ll tell you might have been a good thing because other than a good attitude, she had no business playing on that team. After her degree, she started working at a multidisciplinary clinic as a receptionist where she first met a chiropractor and realized that they were uniquely able to combine mechanics, exercise therapy, and manual therapy to increase not only performance but also quality of life.

After chiropractic school she worked at a large multidisciplinary performance facility and chiropractic clinic for 6 years, where she was able to continue to learn and grow as a practitioner with mentorship from established and experienced chiropractors. She’s joined the breathe. team in 2022 excited to work collaboratively with like-minded practitioners to continue to learn, share, and develop.

Until the age of 34, I thought Acupuncturists were quacks. Then I actually tried Acupuncture and my whole life changed.

I came to be an Acupuncturist via the scenic route, starting with a Bachelor of Science in Genetics and Biology, then a Master’s of Science in Human Genetics, followed by 15 years of working with patients in various hospitals, and finally, after a lightbulb moment, back to school for another 5 years to do my Acupuncture and TCM Diplomas. All told, 30 years of working in health care and I have the grey hairs to prove it.

My passion for medicine has never wavered and I have helped 100’s of patients with a wide variety of health challenges. Humans have an innate ability to heal, and guiding that process is what I love to do. Life should be more than just surviving day after day. Nobody aspires to just eat, sleep and work. I understand that desire to do more, to actually thrive — connect with your tribe, enjoy activities with family and friends, hang out with furry four-leggeds — it’s all about feeling great and being able to do what makes life meaningful. I look forward to helping you feel your best so you can live the extraordinary life you deserve.
